Self Portrait Linocut

Artist Statement

The artwork that I created is basically me staring out in the distance, and it inspired me to create a really cool title, “Thousand-Yard Stare”. That means that I am looking very hard at something as if trying to make out what it is. This picture basically describes me because sometimes you’d just see me staring out into the open as if I were daydreaming. But really, I’m staring very hard at something, I think is interestiong. The background design was basically just like a wood kind of background, but without all the deep lines carved into it. I saw one of the self portrait’s on the score sheet and said maybe I could do something like that. It was originally supposed to look like wooden planks, but I changed it because I thought it would be way to hard to carve with the gouge. I think the only thing that looked off were some of my facial features, my eyes just seemed a little off. Some of my prints went way off to places they weren’t supposed to go, so I thought it was fine. Overall I think the areas I did well on were the shadows, where I did a little hatching, and the background. Although the portrait did not turn out the way I thought it would, I still like my creation.
